Planting a pot within a pot, also known as “double potting,” can be useful for several reasons, including better drainage and easier maintenance.
Here are some tips for successfully planting and watering a potted plant within another pot:
Choose the suitable pots:
Select two pots – an inner pot with drainage holes and an outer decorative pot without holes. Ensure the inner pot fits comfortably within the outer pot with some space around it.
Use quality potting mix:
Fill the inner pot with a well-draining potting mix suitable for the specific plant you’re growing. Make sure the mix is appropriate for your plant’s requirements.
Plant the inner pot:
Carefully plant your chosen plant in the inner pot, following the guidelines for proper depth and spacing. Ensure the top of the soil in the inner pot is slightly below the rim to prevent water spillage.
Place the inner pot:
Set the inner pot, with the plant, into the outer pot. The outer pot is primarily for aesthetic purposes but also creates a barrier to collecting any excess water that drains from the inner pot.
Watering:
When watering, pour water into the inner pot until it drains from the bottom. Allow the inner pot to soak up the water for a few minutes, ensuring the roots are adequately hydrated.
Drainage:
Avoid overwatering, as excess water should collect in the bottom of the outer pot. Monitor this excess water and empty it regularly to prevent root rot.
Watering frequency:
Water your potted plant according to its specific needs. Check the soil’s moisture level in the inner pot by inserting your finger about an inch into the soil. Water when it feels dry, but avoid letting the plant sit in standing water.
Fertilise as needed:
Depending on the type of plant and potting mix, feed your plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer according to the recommended schedule.
Sunlight and care:
Place the double-potted arrangement appropriately that matches your plant’s sunlight requirements. Regularly inspect the plant for signs of pests or diseases and provide necessary care.
Double potting not only enhances the aesthetics of your potted plants but also helps maintain the health of your plants by ensuring proper drainage and avoiding root rot.
Consistent care and attention to your plant’s needs will result in a thriving potted garden.
